The visionary game developer, the mind behind the wildly popular video game Call of Duty, has passed away in a car accident in California he was 55 years old.

The tragic news was confirmed by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, a game studio which he helped establish.

The renowned industry figure lost his life when his car crashed and was engulfed in flames on a freeway in the Los Angeles area on this past Sunday, US media outlets report.

"We are facing an unimaginable loss, and our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends, his family, and the countless individuals inspired by his work," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts said.
