The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.

“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
