The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and European Arrival

This move put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
