The Former President's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
