The Divinity Developer Details Its Application of Generative AI for New Project

The developer behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently unveiled its next major project, generating a wave of anticipation within the player base. However, subsequent remarks from the studio's figurehead have brought a new dimension to the discussion, focusing on the studio's philosophy toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a recent message, Larian's director explained that the team is using machine learning for particular supporting purposes. These involve developing PowerPoint slides, generating rough concept art, and writing temporary copy.

Crucially, Vincke made clear that the final material in the game will be crafted entirely by actual writers. "Our team is writing every line in-house," he said.

We are actively growing our pool of writers and are busily forming dedicated writer rooms.

Since concept art is being specifically mentioned — we right now have twenty-three concept artists and have roles to fill for additional talent.

Each initiative we do is additive and focused on letting our team spend more time on actual creation.

Every machine learning application implemented properly is supplementary to a artist's process, not a replacement for their craft.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The admission of using AI originally sparked backlash among some the fanbase. In reaction, Vincke issued further elaboration on public forums.

"Our team utilizes AI tools to explore references, similar to we use the internet and reference books," he stated. "In the initial planning process we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then replace with original concept art."

He noted, "Larian brings on talent for their creative vision, not for their willingness to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had previously outlined the team's targeted approach to AI and ML, defining its use into key pillars:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to speedily create simple mock-ups of scenarios to test concepts ahead of complete development.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how AI could eventually enhance emergent player agency, especially in creating dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.

He clearly noted that key artistic domains — including writing — are are absolutely not departments where the company is cutting creative input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these very positions.

"We are not launching a game with machine-made assets, nor considering cutting creatives to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
