Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his future after a further convincing defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds suffered their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the club's worst run since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a difficult evening at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I have got a lot of support from the top,” Slot remarked.
“It would be great to change things and secure a win obviously but if you are in a managerial role and struggling then it is normal that people question you.”
He added, “I am OK with my situation. It is not the first time I’ve been in a challenging situation but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Club Management
When asked to provide details on his conversations with the team officials, Slot said:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they trust me.”
He added, “In the normal exchanges I feel the belief. However I've not talked to them since this defeat yet so we'll see.”
Familiar Issues and Squad Response
The manager expressed regret over recurring failings from his Liverpool side in their European loss, specifically wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I do not. I'm telling that to all,” the midfielder said.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a phase such as this with results this poor.”
He stated, “But we still have the emblem on our shirts. And as long as it is gone, we will always battle.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad back to where it needs to be, show everyone again the values of this club and the reason it's called the greatest side in the planet.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
