Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Objections by Egypt and Iran
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations and External Festivities
Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the city experience beyond the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Cultural Background of Objections
Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation stated it refused to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners
The international federation holds operational control over match venues on matchdays. While it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of authorities confiscating flags.
