Per new research, UK officials met with delegates from the oil and gas sector over 500 times during their first year in power – amounting to two times each business day.

Notable Rise Compared to Former Government

The analysis revealed that fossil fuel lobbyists were participating in 48% additional government meetings under the present administration's initial year versus the prior year.

Ministerial Justification

The government supported the meetings, stating that officials held meetings with a broad spectrum of agents from "power industry, labor organizations and civil society to drive forward our sustainable energy major project".

Growing Concerns About Corporate Lobbying

Nevertheless, the findings have raised concern among analysts about the extent of the petroleum industry's leverage over ministers at a time when officials are attempting to lower bills and transition to a more sustainable power framework.

The research, which draws from the official public documentation of ministerial meetings, further discovered:

• Representatives at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero met with oil industry representatives 274 times, with corporate delegates present at nearly 25% of meetings.

• The secretary for energy and climate change met with fossil fuel lobbyists 250 times – with a third of every engagement including sector representatives.

• In the equivalent duration ministry officials engaged with worker group agents 61 times.

• Multiple leading oil corporations met with representatives 100 times collectively.

• Petroleum sector advocates were present at almost every ministerial discussion about the windfall tax, a short-term levy against the "unprecedented revenues" of marine energy corporations.

Party Statements

An environmental politician remarked: "In place of considering researchers, communities suffering from environmental disasters, or families anxious to ensure a secure tomorrow for their descendants, this administration is prioritising lobbyists and earnings for oil and gas giants."

Government Rebuttal

Officials asserted the findings were "misleading", stating many of the firms included also had renewable energy projects and that these topics were often the focus of the conversations.

"Our main focus is a equitable, orderly and thriving transition in the North Sea in line with our climate and statutory requirements, and we are cooperating with the industry to safeguard existing and upcoming populations of quality employment."

Multiple major petroleum industry giants have been condemned for reducing their green funding in the past few years amid a worldwide opposition against climate action.

A campaigns manager from an climate legal group commented: "Ministers pledged a government of service, but that isn't equivalent to bowing the knee to businesses making money out of ecological disaster. It's time to cease favoring environmental offenders and prioritize citizens."
