Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no plans" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".

The administration did not share any more details on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting the president had pushed him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Yet, on this week the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, suggesting that halting hostilities would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the conflict required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Kremlin shorthand for a series of comprehensive conditions that include the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday preceded speculation that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he remarked.
