New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
