Josh Allen Taken Down 8 Occasions as Late Interception Dooms Buffalo in Loss to Texans

Little clicked for the Bills' quarterback in a disappointing contest on Thursday evening against the Texans.

Yet he nearly managed to willing the Bills to a victory before an interception in the last moments ended their hopes in a close loss.

The quarterback endured back-to-back tackles for loss on the team's final possession, resulting in a long fourth down, but Buffalo (7-4) picked up 44 yards on a quick throw from Josh Allen to a receiver, who tossed a lateral to another teammate.

After a false-start penalty created a fourth down situation for the Bills, Calen Bullock intercepted Allen’s pass at the Houston 9 with under half a minute remaining.

“We had a chance to come out on top there at the end,” Allen stated. “We did a solid job of hanging tough and our defense saved us a couple of times. We must find a way, and unfortunately we failed.”

It was difficult for Allen to establish rhythm on a night he was sacked a personal-worst eight times and hit four additional instances. The QB passed for 253 yards with a pair of picks and zero scores after producing six touchdowns in a victory over Tampa Bay the previous week.

“When they hit our quarterback 12 times, that's unacceptable,” Buffalo's head coach McDermott said. “I disapprove of that stat at all. It’s just not a healthy way to compete and it isn't a good way to keep our quarterback in good shape for the remaining games. We’ve got to play better.”

Allen was slow to rise after a sack in the first half. He said he was fine and that his shoulder “went a little numb” after he landed on it awkwardly. He was questioned about being contacted so frequently on Thursday.

It's unpleasant,” he remarked. “I ran into a few myself. I need to be better at throwing the ball away. On multiple occasions, I was going backwards.”

The Bills' QB lost 70 total yards on the eight quarterback takedowns. Anderson had two and a half tackles for loss to lead the Texans. His second one occurred when he nearly took Allen down near the line of scrimmage, but he wriggled away and Anderson got up and pursued him downfield to drop him for an 18-yard loss to force a punt early in the third.

Buffalo played for a second consecutive matchup without wideout Coleman after he was once more a healthy scratch after he was tardy to a squad gathering before their previous contest. He was previously benched for the first series of a defeat to New England in Week 5 after additionally being late for a team session.

No change. We’re just taking it one day at a time,” the coach said. “I felt he had a better week, but we are handling it one day at a time. It wasn’t that it wasn’t thought about, but we went with the guys that give us the optimal opportunity.”

Shakir topped the Buffalo with eight catches for 110 yards and Cook had 116 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Allen was frustrated that the Bills were unable to make plays down the stretch.

“Ultimately, we must execute, and we failed to succeed of that tonight,” he said. “Whatever situation and whatever condition, we need to find a way, and we didn’t.”
