People have come together throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A senior delegate familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but noted that mediators are striving to reduce the disparities between the both parties.

Essential Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war management of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose family member endured the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No location seems like home any longer and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."

"When we see all home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

Near the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately 70% of the population prefer the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality areas and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area said additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south, medical staff said.
