I thought I edged it - Alex Carey on overturned decision.

Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he felt he had nicked the ball when he was given not out on DRS during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test against England.

After surviving on 72, Carey crafted a fine 106 to guide the home side post 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

What happened?

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

England lodged a strong appeal, thinking they had detected an nick, but umpire Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

After skipper Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the footage reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a significant spike although this registered before the ball had passed the bat.

Gaffaney also said he was of the opinion there was a gap between the bat and the ball.

As a result, Carey was reprieved.

"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," commented Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Ongoing Scrutiny

Questions have been raised about 'the Snickometer' throughout the series after a series of inconclusive calls.

Bowling coach David Saker suggested the touring side may take this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. That's where we are."

A Special Hundred

Carey's century was his first in Ashes cricket.

It was also an heartfelt moment for Carey, whose father passed away in recent months. His spouse was crying in the crowd as the batter celebrated by pointing to the heavens.

"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," stated Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. But, no, it was great."

Previous Ashes Drama

This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.

He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, which created a febrile final day.

Speaking about his survival he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."

"Maybe it went my way."
