Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of unneeded presents could be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders during her travels. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The presents, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue donated to various charities.

The items reportedly locked away in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused indefinitely.
A complete inventory is yet to be disclosed, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The question centered on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
An International Array of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- An assortment including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Context
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
This charitable initiative represents a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that accumulate during a time in office.
