Australia Remains Cagey on Second Test XI, Possibility Still Ajar for Pat Cummins' Comeback

The playing eleven for the second Ashes Test is yet to be decided just hours before the first ball in Brisbane, with a closer look of the Gabba pitch necessary before the Australian selectors name a team that may yet feature the fast bowler.

Acting Skipper Smith Leaves Door Open for Shock Recall

Acting skipper Steve Smith fronted an journalists on the eve of the Test but was unable to reveal the precise composition of the lineup. Nonetheless, he did not rule out a surprise recall for Cummins, who was ruled out of the series opener due to a back complaint.

“He has appeared quite impressive to me, the way he’s bowled in the nets,” Smith stated. “Naturally match intensity differs, but he’s coming along well, he understands his fitness.”

11th-Hour Draft Remains a Live Option

The pace spearhead was originally omitted in Australia’s 15-man squad for the next encounter, but came along to Brisbane to continue his recovery with the rest of the squad. Smith indicated he was improving nicely and may be drafted in at the 11th hour.

“The decision is pending but like I said, he’s close,” Smith added. “He’s done his work the recent period and we’ll see after three o’clock when we assess that pitch whether he’s in contention or not.”

Team Dilemmas Ahead if He Plays

A return to the side for Cummins, which seemed improbable just a recently, would result in Perth debutant Brendan Doggett or even spin veteran Nathan Lyon missing out.

Smith refused to guarantee Lyon’s place in the team when pressed about the spinner's inclusion.

“Uncertain,” he replied. “We need to examine the wicket as I said and sum things up from there. This is a ground Nathan has excelled in the past, he’s a world-class spinner. We will consider the options and see how we go.”

Batsmen Awaiting Recall

Josh Inglis will also have to see whether he has made the team. The batter is the frontrunner to come into the XI in place of the unfit Usman Khawaja, with Travis Head likely to take the opening spot again after his brilliant performance in Perth.

“Many options are being discussed,” Smith commented. “It's a matter of waiting what the pitch is like and from there we’ll finalize a playing XI.”

“[Inglis] is clearly a pretty attacking batsman,” Smith added. “Performed excellently on his debut in the subcontinent, he’s been in really good form... He faces quicks very well. So if he gets his opportunity I’m sure he’ll do really well for us.”

Last-Minute Call Timeline

Along with Inglis, the all-rounder is in contention to return to the side at number six, on the assumption that Travis Head partners as opener alongside Jake Weatherald, and Cam Green moves up to No 5.

Smith indicated a definite call on the lineup might come before the day ends, but equally it could be delayed until the day of the match. The match starts at the Brisbane Cricket Ground at two in the afternoon (3pm AEDT) on tomorrow.
